COLQUITT COUNTY CHILD FATALITY...

COLQUITT COUNTY CHILD FATALITY...

COLQUITT COUNTY CHILD FATALITY COMMITTEE CALENDAR YEAR 2017 ANNUAL REPORT During calendar year 2017, the Colquitt County Child Fatality Review Committee received five (5) reports of children who were residents of Colquitt County who died. The Colquitt County Coroner notified the Committee of these deaths in a timely fashion as prescribed by law. The deaths did meet the criterion for a review and both of these cases were in fact reviewed by the Committee with a report submitted on-line during 2018. The reviewable deaths from 2017 were the result of a drowning, medical issues, homicide, suicide and undetermined natural causes. In 2016 there were two deaths and in 2015 there were three deaths. The Colquitt County Committee met twice during 2016 to discuss these cases. Multiple county agencies were involved in the meetings, including the District Attorney's Office, Mental Health, Sheriff's Department, Coroner's Office, Juvenile Court, DFACS, Health Department, Moultrie Police Department, the Board of Education, Magistrate Court, the Victims Advocate, and a community member. Several county agencies operated prevention and safety programs during the year aimed at promoting child safety. The Sheriff's Dept. conducted the CHAMPS program in the elementary schools which educates children about drugs, bullying, peer pressure home alone safety and internet safety. The Sheriff's Dept. also continued to keep school resource officers in the elementary, middle and high schools. One of the investigators attended the Child First training in 2016. The Moultrie Police Dept. participated in numerous events aimed at children and discussed issues related to child safety, bike safety, drug resistance and gang resistance. The MPD has continued an active neighborhood watch program throughout the city. Some officers/deputies also participated in the Board of Education's mentoring program and the mentoring program thru the YMCA. Joint law enforcement agencies participated in the National Night Out which addressed numerous topics dealing with child safety and crime prevention. The Colquitt County Sheriff's Department held gun safety classes. The Colquitt County DFACS continues to assist young people and parents with counseling resources, home and food assistance and parenting classes. This year they also participated in the "Back to Sleep Campaign" dealing with child safety in bed and they were active in promoting the new child safety restraint regulations. The Health Department continues to help meet medical needs and works closely with the Head Start program. The Colquitt County Child Advocacy Center participated in the Walk for Child Abuse Prevention in April, 2017. The Colquitt County Health Department has held several car seat installation classes throughout the year. The Moultrie Fire Department coordinated with the Colquitt County Board of Education to promote fire safety classes for pre-school thru 5th grade students at each school. These courses dealt with fire safety, electrical safety and exit drills from a home. The Fire Dept. has also continued their door to door smoke detector inspection and installation program with the assistance of the American Red Cross. These safety programs impacted over 7,000 people. Colquitt Regional Medical Center sponsored education in car safety seats, safe sitter classes and committed to upgrading pediatric supplies available on ambulances. The Colquitt County Food Bank, thru government programs and private donations, provided emergency food supplies to local families which had hundreds of children. Volunteers from the community put on Teen Maze in Colquitt County. Teen Maze is a life-sized game of LIFE held for all 9th graders in the county. More than 200 volunteers come together to work at the following stations: the entrance party, dates 1 and 2, the hospital, alcohol/drugs and rehab, mental health, a funeral home, dating violence, social media/technology, college, careers, jail, court, gangs, banking, STDs, the three trimesters of pregnancy, parenting, adoption, MADD, and graduation. Students start at a party and they choose from a given set of scripts that determine their "choices" in life. Teen Maze is scripted to allow students to experience the good AND bad consequences of the choices teens are facing. Our hope is that the students will share their Teen Maze experience with their parents, caregivers, and families to start conversations about the events happening in their lives. Also, the Colquitt County School system has instituted Suicide Awareness/Prevention campaigns and has held trainings for their faculty. They also have a Bully Prevention Week in the month of October. The Colquitt County Board of Education held different activities throughout the school year. In September they participated in Suicide Prevention Month and in October they did Teen Maze and Red Ribbon Week. They also participated in the CHAMPS program with the Colquitt County Sheriff's Department. SUBMITTED THIS 6th DAY OF July, 2018. APRIL M.
